Justin, I have enjoyed every one of your travel posts, both here on substack and on IG. Thank you for all of them, and for diving deeper than most travel writers. Places such as Bosnia are just as worthy of blog posts as tourist traps like Paris, and you have done all your destinations justice.
Oh and btw I also really enjoy the funny captions you put on your IG stories. :)
I'm Canadian-Serbian. My family luckily immigrated to Canada just before the Bosnian war. I'm really grateful to you writing this post. You write it with a lot of tenderness, and you communicated the geopolitics of the Republika of Srpska aptly.
I am shocked at how large the war was and how brutal the attempted genocide was, and barely anyone in Canada has heard of it.
Well said. And if you plan to be visiting Rwanda or Cambodia on this trip, you will experience more of what you described. In particular, the genocide museum in Kigali is an overwhelming experience.
Powerful writeup. I immediately thought about "Quo Vadis, Aida?", a recent film that grapples with the Srebenica massacre, and highly recommend to anyone interested in the aftermath of the Yugoslavian breakup, or the dark side of human nature.

Beautifully written. 🥲 This is why travel is important especially to these places.
